New talent, Amanda Dolan, opened her second show – “Call Me Crazy” - at the non-profit Ward-Nasse Gallery recently. The event was packed with art lovers and downtown scene types enjoying drinks from perennial favorite O2 Sparkling Vodka and cupcakes courtesy of Sugar Sweet Sunshine bakery. The mixed media painter uses a variety of application methods in addition to diverse materials to formulate these highly layered works. The works were highly electric in an Acid Pop Art vein, but the simplicity of classic Pop Art morphs into a mélange of stencils, cartoonish painting, and collage – with just enough glitter to remind you that everything was created in fun. While the artist claims to not “take it all too seriously”, I believe her work could be more refined in order to show her true talents best. Additionally one of the major issues sighted by other guests, and I think rightly, was the broad spectrum of women highlighted in the collection and the disconnect between pop stars, icons, and historical figures. I hope in future collections to see a clearer and deeper connection between the works, especially if they are meant to make a collective statement as with “Call Me Crazy”. I think that this is the beginning of a great career for Amanda Dolan, and I greatly look forward to her future exhibitions as she matures as an artist – while maintaining the youthful spirit central to both her work and vibrant personality.
